Niagara on the Lake: Picture of tourists heading for the Niagara FallsThe Niagara Falls is a spectacular waterfall, famous throughout the world for its dramatic cascade around the sections known as the Canadian Horseshoe Falls and the American Falls. Located some 26 km / 16 miles to the south of Niagara on the Lake and spanning the expansive Niagara River, the falls separate Canada's state of Ontario from the upper New York area of the USA.

Niagara Falls is also the name of the Canadian resort city situated next to the waterfall itself, which is very much geared up for tourism, particularly since the falls are best viewed from the river's Canada side. Each year, in excess of 12 million tourists pay a visit to these spectacular falls, making them one of the most popular sights in the whole of Canada.

Most visitors tend to come to the Niagara Falls during the summer, when the mists created by the foaming waters below flicker with reflecting sunlight and create small rainbows.

However, the falls are just as appealing and magical in the winter months, when the flow changes somewhat, since the sides become completely frozen.

Niagara on the Lake: Image of the Niagara Falls and adjacent bridgeThe wonderful natural spectacle sees the Niagara River drop just under 60 meters / 197 feet, being best viewed close-up, onboard the regular Maid of the Mist cruise boats and similar tours, which tend to operate daily between April and October.

Alternatively, check out the souvenir shop adjacent to the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, where you will find a superb observation deck, completely free of charge.
